BLM seeks volunteers for raptor inventory nest survey

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Utah Salt Lake Field Office is seeking volunteers to assist with the annual Raptor Inventory Nest Survey (RINS) in northern Utah.  Participation as a volunteer does not require special experience or education, and the BLM will provide training.  In fact, the only prerequisites are a love for the outdoors, especially Utah’s beautiful west desert, and a sincere desire to help the magnificent birds of prey that call our state home.

Volunteers needed at Antelope Island State Park

Antelope Island State Park needs volunteers to work in the visitor center greeting visitors, providing information about the park and community, and assisting with gift shop sales and merchandising.

Volunteers receive a complimentary park pass, 20% discount in the gift shop, and monthly volunteer newsletter.

A minimum of seven volunteer hours per month are required, preferably in 3.5-hour shifts every two weeks. After May 1, shifts increase to 4.5-hours. Training is provided and spring orientation is required for new volunteers. Utah State Parks also performs a background check prior to hiring.

No open burning allowed in Davis County

DAVIS COUNTY - There will be no open burn in Davis County this year because of an extreme fire danger.

Homeowners may not burn anything, including yard clippings and other debris, in their yards according to a press release from the Davis County Fire Marshal.

“There is so much grass and trees and stuff left over from last year, that the fire danger is extremely high this year,” said Ellis Bruch, Davis County Fire Marshal.

“It’s just a high, high danger this year,” said Bruch. He said the lack of snow in the mountains and rain this spring are contributing to the dry landscape.

Open houses being held about F-35 housing at HAFB

The US Air Force is asking for public opinion about new plan to house F-35 fighter jets at Hill Air Force Base.

They are holding three meetings to take public comment on the findings of a study conducted on the plan's environmental impact.

The first was held in Layton on Tuesday.

The second will be held Wednesday night at Ogden High School (2828 Harrison Blvd., Ogden).

The third will be held at the West Wendover Branch Library (590 Camper Road, Wendover, Nev.).

Each evening's hearing will start with an informal open house from 5-6 p.m., where community members will have an opportunity to talk with Air Force representatives about the basing proposal and the Draft EIS.

The formal hearing will begin at 6 p.m., with each member of the public given three minutes to make oral comments about the Draft EIS.

The Air Force is also accepting written comments on the Draft EIS through June 1.

Official: HAFB mercury spill poses no risk to public

A representative from the Utah Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste is reassuring the public after news of the alleged cover up of a mercury spill on Hill Air Force Base.

Scott Anderson, Director of the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste, says his agency only found traces of the metal when they checked it out and that it poses no risk to public health or workers.

"We still are waiting for the HAFB response to our notice and once we get that we'll decide in terms of the penalty," said Anderson.

HAFB has until April 2 to respond to the state.

Community to hold public hearing on dangers of a refinery

Doctors and community members in Davis County are holding a meeting Thursday night on the dangers of living near a refinery.

They say refineries pollute more than official reports show, and that pollution will only get worse if they're allowed to expand.

The Davis County Community Coalition and the Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment will be holding a town hall meeting on Thursday night to talk about how refineries affect public health.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Bountiful City Hall.
